    <title>Don's Thanksgiving Blessing</title>
    <description>This Thanksgiving the food was a bit tastier to Don, as he sat down at one of City Union Mission&amp;rsquo;s tables.&amp;nbsp; He had just been set free from jail the night before.
Don entered the Christian Life Program October 6th, 2008, unaware of a warrant that had been posted for his arrest on a traffic violation.&amp;nbsp; When he discovered it he was afraid.&amp;nbsp; His counselor, David Phillips, had been talking with Don about the need for him to turn himself into the Police, but he was more than skeptical about David&amp;rsquo;s advice.&amp;nbsp; David had been keeping Greg Gay, the Christian Life Program Administrator apprised of the situation.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;As the days went by, I watched David work with Don, and God too.&amp;nbsp; It didn&amp;rsquo;t take long for Don to make a decision to turn himself in,&amp;rdquo; said Greg.&amp;nbsp;
After making this decision he had to wait two more weeks before his court appearance.&amp;nbsp; During this time, Don was a torn man.
Greg Relates, &amp;ldquo;&amp;ldquo;He came to my office, telling me of his decision.&amp;rdquo; &amp;ldquo;I know that the Lord is guiding me to do the right thing,&amp;rdquo; he said with a strained look on his face, &amp;ldquo;but I&amp;rsquo;m scared.&amp;rdquo;&amp;nbsp; His honesty caught me.&amp;nbsp; I invited him to sit down in my office.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;Don, we don&amp;rsquo;t know what will happen when you go to court on Friday,&amp;rdquo; I told him.&amp;nbsp; The reality is that when we&amp;rsquo;re not in control, we tend to think about how catastrophic our situation could be, rather than giving it to God and trusting Him with the outcome.&amp;nbsp; I tried to help him see the situation a little more objectively.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;We need to pray and wait on the Lord,&amp;rdquo; I said.&amp;nbsp; In my heart, I thought that he might be arrested.&amp;nbsp; I could tell I was dealing with a man who was ready to bolt, like a scared fianc&amp;eacute; just before a wedding.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;I want to run, but I know that I need to do the right thing,&amp;rdquo; Don said.&amp;nbsp; He was telling himself the truth, but he sure was wrestling with himself.&amp;nbsp; His eyes began to well up with tears.&amp;nbsp; They got red.&amp;nbsp; He put his head in his hands and wept before me.&amp;nbsp; I felt his fear.&amp;nbsp; We prayed.&amp;rdquo;
A few days later, David took Don to his court appearance.&amp;nbsp; He was arrested, as he feared.&amp;nbsp; However, on Wednesday night, before Thanksgiving, as Greg was headed to the main classroom to lead Chapel he heard a voice shouting from the distance.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;Hey Greg!!!&amp;rdquo;&amp;nbsp; It was Don, standing right before Greg, looking a little rugged, like he had not shaved for a while.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;Greg, they let me out today, just before Thanksgiving,&amp;rdquo; said Don as the two men hugged, both recognizing that Don had a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

    <title>Night Sort rallies around City Union Mission's </title>
    <description>When UPS&amp;nbsp;Lenexa Night Sort retention Supervisor Judy Menge saw the call out for the need of new, clean, white socks and briefs for City Union Mission, she couldn&amp;rsquo;t think of a better way for a charitable holiday donation.

&amp;ldquo;I&amp;rsquo;ve had a family member who distanced himself from the family for a time and used a facility much like the City Union Mission.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; The facility was able to provide him some relief in his time of need&amp;rdquo;, said Judy.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;The night sort has always been a giving group, and I knew that we could make a difference and help out.&amp;rdquo;
Through various means they got the word out that the night sort had set a goal to collect 1000 pair of socks and briefs. In one short week, the night sort was able to beat that goal by over 10%. The collective effort of the hub employees and their supervisors collected 744 pairs of socks and 400 briefs for a total of 1144 items. Two employees above all the rest stood out with their charitable efforts. Randy Fink and Jeff Moody both went above a beyond by donating over 50 items each.&amp;nbsp;Jeff said, &amp;ldquo;There are people out there that really need the help, and I&amp;rsquo;m glad that I can help out.&amp;rdquo;

&amp;ldquo;The enthusiasm collecting these essentials was great&amp;rdquo; said sort manager Chris Codina.&amp;nbsp; &amp;ldquo;The giving was contagious and goes to show you what can be accomplished when people move in the same direction towards a goal.&amp;nbsp;It&amp;rsquo;s nice to see the employees give back to the community that we serve.&amp;rdquo;
City Union Mission helps clients beak the cycle of poverty, homelessness and dependence on government assistance by helping people prepare for jobs and manage their money so they can become self sufficient in the future. But this doesn&amp;rsquo;t happen without assistance from individuals, organizations, and businesses, like Night Sort!

    <title>English Class Assignment</title>
    <description>The University Academy is a charter school in Kansas City, Missouri. When one of their students was given an English class assignment to do something to educate or improve the world he didn&amp;rsquo;t have far to look. Patrick Corley, a Senior at the school, decided to do something about homelessness. His mom said, &amp;ldquo;He called his project &amp;quot;Under Wraps&amp;quot; for a dual reason:&amp;nbsp; Homelessness is a hidden problem in our society -- that is, under wraps --&amp;nbsp; and, coats and&amp;nbsp; blankets provide warmth by wrapping the person.&amp;nbsp; He distributed fliers at school and in our neighborhood, as a result he collected twelve bags full of coats. Patrick and a family friend, Katrina Taggart, then delivered the coats to City Union Mission&amp;rsquo;s Men&amp;rsquo;s Emergency Center. I am very proud of him and so glad that City Union Mission does so much for so many, and that&amp;nbsp;Patrick was able to do his part.&amp;rdquo;

    <title>Royals Celebrated Thanksgiving with us!</title>
    <description>On November 21st The Kansas City Royals served a Thanksgiving feast to 250 guests at&amp;nbsp;the Men&amp;rsquo;s Center and 100 guests at&amp;nbsp;Family Center.
For the third consecutive year the Kansas City Royals reached out to area families in need during the holiday season by volunteering at the Mission. Royals Hall of Fame second baseman Frank White and outfielder David DeJesus joined senior vice president-baseball operations/general manager Dayton Moore and senior vice president-business operations Kevin Uhlich as well as other Royals associates in serving a Thanksgiving feast to guests at City Union Mission's two area facilities.

White and Moore helped serve&amp;nbsp;guests at the Family Center, while DeJesus and Uhlich served meals to guests from the Men's Center.

Pat Brodnax, Core Volunteer Administrator, says, &amp;ldquo;When people come here they gain first hand knowledge of the many faces of homelessness. They discover there&amp;rsquo;s a whole lot more going on here than simply providing a meal and a place to sleep. Our guests benefit from experiencing the fellowship and compassion. For some it may be the first time they have been treated with dignity.&amp;rdquo;

    <title>A City Union Mission Christmas Party</title>
    <description>Karen and Brent Blackwell thought a fun way to bless City Union Mission&amp;rsquo;s clients this Christmas would be to have a party. So, Karen invited her friends to a City Union Mission Christmas party she hosted in her home. Along with the invitation she sent the list of the Christmas gift items City Union Mission would need to stock the shelves of their Christmas store that she found on the website. Each one was asked to bring a snack and an unwrapped gift.

&amp;ldquo;Our friends really liked the idea&amp;hellip;between 30 and 35 participated this year. Brent and I were really pleased and blessed by the whole thing,&amp;rdquo; said Karen

    <title>Ladies Bible Study Christmas Party</title>
    <description>City Union Mission&amp;rsquo;s Ladies Bible Study had their Christmas party Tuesday, December 9th at Redeemer Fellowship, formerly known as 1st Calvary Baptist. The party included a luncheon held in the church&amp;rsquo;s Montgall Hall, beautifully decorated by NLP residents, staff and volunteers. Guests from the emergency overnight shelter, our long-term program and the community Bible Study program were all invited to come and enjoy.

Guests enjoyed a wonderful time of singing Christmas Carols followed by a presentation of song performed by a choir of 5th graders from Line Creek Elementary in the Park Hill District. The Christmas message was shared by Family Center Administrator, Dan Dickey, who spoke about the &amp;quot;True Meaning of Christmas&amp;quot; using the acronym P-R-E-S-E-N-T based on the passage of scripture taken from Luke 2:8-14,

Luke 2:8-14 (New American Standard Bible)
&amp;quot;In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened.&amp;nbsp;But the angel said to them, &amp;quot;Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.&amp;nbsp;&amp;quot;This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.&amp;quot;&amp;nbsp;And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, &amp;quot;Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.&amp;quot; &amp;quot;

Guests were encouraged to know the present, or gift, of God when they present themselves to Him. It was a great meal and time of fellowship where each one received a gift in celebration of Jesus' Birthday!
