First Baptist Church of Lee's Summit's Pastor Blake McKinney challenged church members to give generously to those who are less fortunate. As a result of this challenge City Union Mission was one of four recipients to a generous donation. Thank you Pastor Blake McKinney and the members of First Baptist Church Lee's Summit for your selfless act.

Two Local Companies Team up to Serve

Most companies probably wouldn’t consider a rescue mission when selecting the venue for their holiday party. But for employees of John Deere Landscapes and its manufacturer Hunter Industries, holding their holiday meal at City Union Mission was ideal. “Serving others was our theme this year, and from what I have heard, the event with City Union Mission will definitely be a standing stone in the history of our group of employees,” says John Deere Landscapes Vice President Jim Fruth.

On December 15, employees served meals to guests in our Family Center, Christian Life Center and Men’s Center. The companies also paid for 70 employees to join our guests for the meal. John Deere Landscapes also bought and assembled 10 quality bicycles for our Christmas Store and the volunteer activity doubled as a company team-building exercise. Hunter Industries purchased approximately 550 pairs of new socks and 550 pairs of new underwear for men staying at the overnight shelter.

City Union Mission Achieves $3.5 Million Campaign Goal

City Union Mission’s CELEBRATE HOPE: Reach Out to K.C.’s Poor and Homeless fundraising campaign has exceeded its $3.5 million goal, Executive Director Daniel J. Doty announced today. “We are in awe of God for His blessings, and we’re thankful for the generosity of so many in greater Kansas City!” he said.

The campaign began October 1, 2009, with the goal of raising one-half of the Mission’s cash budget by the end of January 2010, to support the Mission’s services and programs for the hungry, homeless and poor in the metro area all year long. The Mission receives nearly 75 percent of its donated income from individuals, businesses and churches. Those contributions are used to provide basic necessities including food, shelter, clothing and medical services, along with counseling, long-term recovery and career-development and job-placement assistance.

Doty believes Kansas Citians have been especially sensitive to the needs of the community in recent months as their fellow citizens continue to battle the effects of the economy. The situation became even more critical as record low temperatures caused families already struggling financially to ask for help with utility payments and the homeless to seek shelter from the cold.

The Mission’s leadership is grateful for the outpouring of support to the CELEBRATE HOPE campaign, which allowed the Mission to begin the year on solid ground, but Doty stresses the generosity of donors and partners remains vitally important in the months ahead.

“We invite all our donors, friends and partners to celebrate with us in prayer and in their hearts and to acknowledge that this achievement is their achievement. Their selfless generosity will benefit our neighbors in need and our community as a whole in far too many ways to count,” Doty said.

City Union Mission Receives Food Donation From Vance Publishing's food360 Division

On Tuesday, January 5th, City Union Mission was the recipient of nearly $10,000 worth of ground beef, sausage patties, pork roasts and other protein-laden and nutritional food items from Vance Publishing’s food360° division in conjunction with the Kansas City Airport Hilton.

“We feel very blessed to have been chosen to receive this generous and much-needed contribution,” said the Rev. Daniel J. Doty, City Union Mission’s executive director. “People come to the Mission with so many needs, but the biggest request we receive-no matter what time of year-is for food.” Doty said the demand for food assistance continues to grow as jobs are cut or lost throughout the metro area and incomes no longer cover essential needs.
Food360° Vice President/Publishing Director Cliff Becker believes this type of activity can make a positive difference in the community. “We’ve all lived and benefited by our hardworking agricultural community, and we want to give back during this tough economic time,” he said, explaining the gift was made on behalf of the division’s clients and audience.
City Union Mission serves more than 330,000 meals to hungry men, women and children throughout the metro every year at its emergency shelters and long-term recovery centers. In addition, the Mission also distributes food boxes each month through its Community Assistance Program.

City Union Mission Offers New Tool to Help the Homeless

In a preemptive initiative to meet the rising wave of homelessness in our community, City Union Mission has established the Homeless Care Fund of Kansas City with the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation to which individuals, businesses and organizations can contribute financially to provide food, shelter and items to meet other essential needs of homeless men, women and children through the Mission.
According to the Association of Gospel Rescue Mission’s (AGRM) 20th annual Snapshot Survey of the Homeless released in November, the number of first-time homeless turning to City Union Mission for safe lodging is 40 percent—higher than the average reported by other Missions nationwide. “As we’ve witnessed the need for emergency shelter climbing in our community—and to an even greater extent here than in other metropolitan areas—we recognized the need to put more tools in place to give donors and partners a way to help the Mission assist more people,” said Dennis Chapman, the Mission’s associate executive director of development. “This fund is an instrument that will allow Kansas City to conveniently share with the Mission.”
Chapman says another alarming Survey statistic reveals the percentage of people under 18 the Mission cares for is at 15 percent, while the national average is nine. “What we’re seeing daily bears this out and goes hand-in-hand with the rise in homelessness overall,” Chapman said. “We’re welcoming children to our Family Center at younger and younger ages, as more families are displaced because of lost jobs, foreclosures, evictions and other tragic impacts of the economy. This fund will be especially important as we do everything possible to create a safe and comfortable environment that meets the needs of children who can’t go home.”

Co-Chairs for the Women Who've Changed the Heart of the City have been named

City Union Mission has announced its co-chairs – Judy Steadman and Karen Fenaroli - for its third annual Women Who’ve Changed the Heart of Kansas City event. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 20, 2010 with proceeds to benefit Camp CUMCITO for children, City Union Mission’s camp in Warsaw, Mo.
“We are thrilled to have Judy Steadman and Karen Fenaroli as this year’s event co-chairs. This fundraiser is crucial because it makes it possible for up to 500 homeless and low-income children to attend camp this summer,” said Dennis Chapman, associate executive director of City Union Mission.
Steadman, now retired, formerly worked as an executive assistant to the Kansas City Chiefs Chairman of the Board. Prior to her work with the Chiefs, Steadman’s career includes executive secretary to the director of Citizens Conference on State Legislatures, assistant to the pastor of her church, worked in an administration function at the Raytown School District where her late husband, Dix Tewksbury coached, US Forest Service, and FBI in Minneapolis.
Steadman’s civic involvements include having served on the steering committee for Muriel Kauffman Women's Heart Center and Operation Breakthrough. Her true focus is working one-on-one with people who have special needs.

(Judy Steadman)
Karen Fenaroli is vice president of EFL Associates, a leading executive search firm, where she specializes in finance and operational opportunities for a wide variety of industries. Prior to joining EFL, she was the chief executive officer of a wholesale manufacturing company with four overseas factories and distribution through 200+ retail stores in the United States, Canada and Europe. Fenaroli has also worked for Coca-Cola Enterprises and KPMG in Atlanta.
Since relocating to Kansas City in 2007, Fenaroli has become active in two principal outreaches: City Union Mission and The United Way of Greater Kansas City. At the Mission, she has acted as co-chair for the Women Who’ve Changed the Heart of Kansas City Luncheon since 2008. Also, she serves on the Women’s DeToqueville committee for the Greater Kansas City United Way and co-chair of its Women’s Leadership Council launch. In 2003, she was the recipient of Massachusetts’s Commonwealth Institute’s Entrepreneurial Spirit Award that recognizes outstanding women-owned businesses.

(Karen Fenaroli)
City Union Mission is proud to present this annual event that honors Women Who’ve Changed the Heart of the City. Proceeds from this event benefit Camp CUMCITO, City Union Mission’s camp in Warsaw, Missouri. Through the camp, up to 500 homeless and low-income children have the opportunity to enjoy a real-life camp experience each year.

“This has become one of our most popular volunteer activities of the entire year.”—Daniel J. Doty

While reindeer on their rooftops may be more dramatic, the children of low-income and working-poor families will be just as excited when they see vehicles pull up in front of their homes, loaded with brightly wrapped packages from City Union Mission.

The gifts were selected by needy families and individuals who applied to “shop” at the Mission’s Christmas Store between November 30 and December 16 for toys, clothing, household items and other goods that had been donated by Mission friends and generous partners in the community. The presents were then wrapped by volunteers who will also take part in delivering them on December 24, just in time for Christmas.

“This has become one of our most popular volunteer activities of the entire year,” explained the Rev. Daniel J. Doty, City Union Mission’s executive director. “We encourage our Christmas distribution volunteers to make the gift deliveries as personal as possible—as if they were visiting with a neighbor across the street or around the corner. The volunteers offer Christmas blessings and words of encouragement to the families and even pray with them.” Doty says the volunteers feel good about the opportunity to meet the people the Mission assists, and often the actual donors of the items make the deliveries themselves.

Scores of volunteers—compassionate individuals along with church groups and members of other organizations—will fill over 100 cars, trucks, vans and busses with thousands of gifts
and make deliveries between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The distribution covers the entire Kansas City metro area and outlying communities as far away as Springhill, Kansas. In all, the lives of more than 490 families will be touched by this loving outreach.

“Once again, Mission friends and supporters have allowed us to make Christmas a time of joy and celebration for our neighbors in need—and especially their children—and we’re truly grateful,” Doty said.

Rent-A-Center's Random Act of Caring

City Union Mission has been the recipient of furniture, appliances and electronics donated by Rent-A-Center through the company’s 47th annual Random Act of Caring initiative. The items will be used by the Mission to better serve local families and individuals who are homeless, near-homeless or in other ways struggling to provide basic essentials for themselves and their families.
“It’s through generous gifts like this that City Union Mission is able to care for Kansas City’s hurting and poor,” said City Union Mission Executive Director Dan Doty. “We’re grateful to Rent-A-Center for their kind consideration toward those we serve. We recognize that there are many choices for these types of donations. We count it a privilege to partner with the employees and management of Rent-A-Center.”
Rent-A-Center’s donation to City Union Mission includes 10 computer monitors, a laptop computer, two media cabinets, a washer and dryer, a 42-inch monitor, a Blu-ray home theater system and a chair/twin sleeper. During the presentation ceremony, Rent-A-Center surprised the Mission with an additional check for $2,000.
“Some outstanding organizations find themselves with multiple needs but limited resources, particularly in these challenging economic times,” said Nick Scimeca, district manager with Rent-A-Center. “We help customers in that very same situation every day, so we wanted to find a way to contribute to our customers’ communities. Through Random Acts of Caring, we are able to help where help is needed, when it’s needed. That’s what we’re all about.”

(Electronics and large chair in background were donated by Rent-A-Center.)
